Why everyone is talking about AI in Healthcare?

Role of AI in healthcare

The use of artificial intelligence in healthcare includes the use of various powerful technology algorithms and another type of AI to help patients understand their diagnosis and other aspects of healthcare. Moreover, AI can help people by saving some expenditures and can be used to analyze genetic information and electronic health care records, as well as other sources of medical data.

Artificial Intelligence

Disease identification, clinical decision support, drug discovery, and patient monitoring are some examples of how artificial intelligence is used in healthcare. However, the use of AI in healthcare is surrounded by major ethical, legal, and social issues that need to be thoroughly examined and addressed.

Applications of AI in Healthcare

Definition of AI: Artificial intelligence is additionally referred to as machine learning," and different kinds of AI are used in the healthcare sector. AI has the ability to change healthcare by developing personalized treatment plans and improving illness evaluation. However, it requires careful thinking and study, as AI in healthcare raises some ethical and legal issues.

And hey! I have attached a YouTube video in case you want to learn more about AI in healthcare. Click on the video below.

Some of the applications of AI in healthcare are as follows:

  • Electronic medical records, often known as EHRs, can be studied to recognize changes and predict patient outcomes. This is the kind of help we can get from AI. For instance, AI can help identify patients who want to be readmitted to the hospital and allow doctors to take steps to treat them before their condition worsens.
  • Virtual health advisor: With the help of a virtual health advisor powered by AI, people can gain access to medical information and manage serious illnesses more easily. Conversational agents such as chatbots may provide links for patients to connect to medical providers, deliver medication reminders, and handle medical-related queries.

  • Drug discovery: AI helps in the drug discovery process by evaluating various data points with just one click. This feature is especially helpful for pharmaceutical companies because it helps them find possible new ways to discover medications without investing so much money and time in experiments. Quite easy, right?
  • Precision Medicine: AI can help generate personalized therapies by using a patient's specific genetic makeup, medical history, and some other standards. This may result in more appropriate treatments with fewer harmful effects.

Let's have a look at the pros and cons of AI in healthcare.

Pros:-
  1. Improved diagnosis (by analyzing enormous amounts of data in a brief period).
  2. Personalised treatment (based on their genetic structures and problems)
  3. Increased efficiency of tasks
  4. Predictive analytics (allowing early diagnosis of disease before it gets critical)
  5. Reduce cost (by increasing efficiency).
Cons:-
  1. Lack of human interaction, due to which people might be unable to trust AI.
  2. Data privacy concerns arise as their personal data is vulnerable to hacking.
  3. Differences in healthcare outcomes due to biased content.
  4. There are technical limitations because it's a machine, so sometimes its accuracy and effectiveness may vary.
  5. Quality control issue due to a lack of regulation.

Will AI replace doctors in the future?

No doubt, AI outperforms humans in some activities, as it has shown remarkable accuracy and speed in tasks related to medical terms such as detecting illness and analyzing medical pictures. However, some things AI fails to follow, such as critical thinking, communication, empathy, and so many other major skills necessary in healthcare.
In my opinion, while AI may change the way healthcare is delivered, it is unlikely to fully replace physicians. Instead, AI is more likely to help doctors in their work by encouraging better decision-making and more personalized healthcare.
